Providing Incentives for Elementary School Students to Read More

Each spring Kittery Rotary After Hours works with the amazing staff at Horace Mitchell Primary School on a book exchange, to ensure every student has books to take home for summer reading.

The annual Book Exchange began 6 years ago as part of the Club’s Kittery Reads Program which was partially funded by a Rotary District Grant.  The grant centered around a series of activities and events aimed at improving literacy in our community. Throughout the year club members collect new and gently used books.  We work to ensure a wide variety of books and topics, as well as graphic novels, which are of particular interest for many students.  Book donations in 2021 were generously supported by Heinemann Publishing with a donation of over 300 new books.

Each year in early June the Club works with teachers and staff from Mitchell School to organize the book exchange.  On the designated day, students in grades K-3 to “shop” for books that they will take home and keep as their own with the intent of encouraging summer reading.  The event is not only one of our club members’ favorites, but a student favorite as well.
